Castles

With Northumberland being a border county it boasts over 70 castles for you to explore, from ruins to the second largest inhabited castle in the uk, Alnwick Castle.

Here is just a selection for you.

Warkworth Castle

The ruins of Warkworth castle can be found just a 5 minute drive from Sycamore Cottage, in fact if you walk to the end of the bridal path that goes to Warkworth, near to the end of the drive you'll be able to see the castle in the distance.

 

Alnwick Castle

The second largest inhabited castle in the country, Alnwick castle is just a 20 minute drive from the cottage. Home to the Percy family and also used in Harry Potter.

The Alnwick garden is also well worth a visit, to see the fantastic water features, there is even a poison garden.

 

Dunstanburgh Castle

The ruins of Dunstanburgh castle are only 

accessable on foot. The easy 1.3 mile walk from Craster takes you right along the coast. If you're lucky you might even see dolphins off the coast.

 

Bamburgh Castle

The mighty Bamburgh Castle is a 40 minute drive from Sycamore Cottage.

Recently used for filming the latest Indiana Jones Film.

 

Lindisfarne Castle

Lindisfarne Castle is located on Holy Island and is a 1 hour drive from the cottage.

Holy Island is accessed via a tidal causeway, please check the safe crossing times.

 

Chillingham Castle

Reputedly Britain's most haunted historic castle, Chillingham is a 45 minutes drive away. You could also visit Chillingham Wild Cattle whilst you're here.

 

Paxton House

Whilst not officially a castle, Paxton House, just over the boarder in Scotland has some wonderful walks along the banks of the river Tweed.
